Significant Online Failure Impacts Numerous Online Platforms and Mobile Apps
A large-scale web disruption has affected many online platforms and mobile apps globally, and users experiencing issues getting online following issues at Amazon’s web hosting service.
The affected services encompass Snapchat, Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, along with a host of Amazon-managed platforms such as its main retail site and the Ring security doorbell company.
Across the United Kingdom, Lloyds bank was affected along with its branches Halifax and the Scottish bank, while there were also reports of issues accessing the HMRC site on that morning. Also in the UK, multiple Ring users took to networks to state their security devices were malfunctioning.
In the UK alone, reports of issues on particular platforms totaled the tens of thousands for each platform.
The company stated that the issue began in the east coast of the United States at the cloud division, a section that provides crucial online backbone for many businesses, who rent out space on Amazon servers. AWS is the most extensive web hosting platform.
Soon after the start of the day (PDT) in the US (morning UK time), Amazon confirmed “elevated problem frequencies and slowdowns” for the cloud services in a region on the east coast of the United States. The ripple effect was seen to disrupt apps around the world, with the Downdetector site showing issues with the same sites in multiple continents.
The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a tool that monitors internet outages, also reported a surge in issues on Monday morning, including several cases found in Virginia, the location of the AWS US-East-1 zone where officials confirmed the issues originated.
